“Both of my parents were born in Cuba, and immigrated to the United States by force of exile'” said the first-year medical student. “As a first-generation, hopeful physician in my family, this is something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”

“It was a no-brainer choosing UF. And today I’m very excited to start on my journey toward becoming a physician. I look forward to everything that comes my way, and I look forward to excelling in my education.”

As part of an already special occasion, the students were treated to a surprise gift that had unique significance as they prepare for a career in patient care. Following a tradition started almost 20 years ago, the College of Medicine presented students with their own stethoscopes—a gift made possible by the generous donations of alumni.

“I think it’s the first symbol of our new journey to becoming physicians and our new path forward,” Cueto said. “The stethoscope is not only used to listen to patients, but it’s also a sense of physical connection with the patient, and it’s something that’s beautiful and it’s something we’re all very appreciative for. I’d like to thank the alumni for providing that and handing that down.”
