UF Women's Volleyball Team Spreads Cheer to Pediatric Patients

The University of Florida Women’s Volleyball team took time out of their game schedule to visit the patients and families at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital on Dec.1. The team, accompanied by Coach Mary Wise and professor and chairman of pediatrics Scott Rivkees, M.D., toured the pediatric floors and spent time with each patient signing autographs and taking pictures.

“It’s difficult for our patient families to be in the hospital during the holidays, away from extended family and holiday traditions,” said Sarah Franz, development associate for Children’s Miracle Network and the event’s organizer. “The volleyball team's visit each Thanksgiving makes the stay a little brighter, and we are very grateful for the team’s time and compassion.”

The annual visit to the children staying on the pediatric units and the PICU has become a holiday tradition, now in its 21st year.

Parking Lot Party Supports PICU

Gadgets and Gold provided a free, fun day for the whole family on Dec. 7, with a parking lot party benefitting the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital. Throughout the parking lot, located at 6450 SW Archer Road, were donation stations for new toys and monetary contributions. The goal of the event was to provide the children in the PICU a celebration of the milestones they may experience during their stay. UF Health would like to extend a big thank you to Easton Foundations and The Academy Preschool at the Family Church, which sponsored the event. Thank you also to Bouncin’ Big, which provided a bounce house and face painting, and Cork & Colors, which provided ornament art to help attendees get in the holiday spirit. The delicious food was donated by food trucks Humble Pie and Off the Griddle.

Thank you to everyone for coming out and making the stay for our patients and families a little more enjoyable!
