Shands Cancer Hospital at UF Celebrates 1-year anniversary

The excitement that we felt this time last year is still fresh in our minds. We were preparing to open a $388 million, 500,000 square-foot facility that was going to change the face of cancer care in the state of Florida. Additionally, on the first floor of this building, we were opening a state-of-the-art, critical-care center and Level I trauma center.

From across the state and region, donors, state officials, employees, stakeholders and those living in the Gainesville community gathered as we unveiled this collaborative achievement.

Making the Shands Cancer Hospital at the University of Florida a reality took so many dedicated people coming together. However, we at Shands want to especially thank our donors.

Our donors truly made this happen – along with our employees, UF physicians, the people who designed and built the building and the staff members who work in this facility every day.

We have so many wonderful success stories from the lives we’ve touched in the past year.

Please know that when “we” save a life in this facility, you are part of that “we.” You are part of the Shands healing family.

To date in this facility, we have had:

60,972 total ED visits

5,404 total OR cases

148 total bone marrow transplant procedures

7,062 total admissions from non-ED units

On behalf of all of the patients and their loved ones, we give you a sincere thank you and congratulate you. You have truly made a difference.
